Jazz of all sorts: Sicilian marches, gangster movies, Western heroes, folk music and Prokofiev

— Ruth and her fellow musicians fearlessly explore the wonderful world of music well outside the box, a world which for them is both home and mystery all in one. She journeys through the realms of the blues, visits the shores of Atonalia, reaches the Zappa Islands. She finds inspiration in the dives of Berlin and the nature surrounding it. She plants her garden of compositions with colorful melodies and improvisation and transforms what she sees, hears, smells and tastes into the blossoms and fruits of wonderful sounds.

Ruth Schepers, aka “Rusira”, is and remains curious and attentive. Questioning certainties and prejudices alike, she is always re-examining, seeking out again and again the places that mark her sometimes uncomfortable home on the map of improvised music. And is always keen to keep exploring.

It‘s not necessarily about playing it up on the big stage. Persistent and versatile, she composes and breathes life into flute, clarinet and saxophone. She both leads her own bands and contributes as a side-player. And at the same time teaching enthusiastically, and being as authentic as anyone can.

Jazz with body and soul. Straightforward, always ready to see the laugh in a situation, and yes, still always curious. You can hear her now in these projects:

Rusira Mixtett

Besetzung: Aaron Schmidt-Wiegand (tr), Tobias Dettbarn (cl), Ruth Schepers (C-melody sax, Fl, comp.), Robert Würz (alto sax), Oleg Hollmann (bari sax), Jörg Bücheler (trb.) Benjamin König (tuba), Sebastian Deufel (dr)

The “Rusira Mixtett”, let‘s call it a grassroots brass-band republic. Founded by Ruth Schepers, it is home to six or seven brass players and a drummer. They plough their land of melody-obsessed grooves with a heady mix of partly composed, partly improvised sounds — in the end, no one knows for sure where it all will lead to, but everyone is guided by the best intentions to get the finest crop.

The pieces are often written for specific people — be they musicians or not. When performed, it often so happens that they turn into instant collective compositions. And that is not at all unintentional. The admittedly initially rather bare arrangements may not have much harmony at first, but they make up for it in groove – and so they build and bloom into the audience and beyond through the most soulful improvisation driven by the deepest passion and instinct.

The current program was funded by the music fund ‚Neustart Kultur‘ in 2021.

Instrumentation: Aaron Schmidt-Wiegand (tr), Tobias Dettbarn (cl), Ruth Schepers (C-melody sax, fl, comp.), Robert Würz (alto sax), Oleg Hollmann (bari sax), Jörg Bücheler (trb.) Benjamin König (tuba), Sebastian Deufel (dr)

Faustroll Five (Four)

Besetzung: Ruth Schepers (cl), Rolf Sudmann (bj), Jason Liebert (sous), Michael Griener (dr) Dirk Steglich (cl)

Strange days — modernity meets history, a tad crazy and inspired by Dr. Faustroll, the „pataphysician“ main character of a novel published at the end of the 19th century by the bohemian Alfred Jarry. The doctor, driven by a desire for madness, paradox and mock precision, goes on a boat trip from Paris … to Paris with the marshal René-Isidor Panmuphle and a baboon named Cheekbuckle…

Thus inspired, the five musicians here, otherwise living in the free, experimental or at least contemporary jazz scene, travel back in time. In doing so, they offer outright entertainment with the downright spring-like jazz of the 1920s and 1930s. Exhilaration guaranteed!

Instrumentation: Ruth Schepers (cl), Rolf Sudmann (bj), Jason Liebert (sous), Michael Griener (dr) Dirk Steglich (cl)

Composers’ Orchestra Berlin

An ensemble whose members are also the composers of the pieces they perform — there are no „players only“ or „writers only“ here. Conceived of by the great composer Hazel Leach, who has been putting it into practice since 2012 with definite verve.

With four albums under their belt, the COB is a regular guest at the jazz club ‚Schlot‘.

Unterricht

In saxophone, clarinet and flute, in my “capital” Berlin-Wedding. I’ve offered instruction since 1996. Booking can be done privately or through the Fanny Hensel music school.

Whether classical or jazz and pop, I always tailor lessons to your individual learning needs.

Playing by ear is just as important as reading music — so improvisation fans are also very welcome. We practice with both old favorites and not so familiar pieces (it broadens your horizons!). With patience on both sides and taking joy in the learning. Piano accompaniment or canned music are included from the beginning as it enhances the musical fun in the learning process and trains the ear from the start.

Challenges are always welcome. To overcome possible obstacles, I bring a wealth of imagination, energy and empathy. I freely admit that the only people who may not be in the best hands with me are those who indeed WANT everything, but aren’t ready to DO for it. If it’s clear from the start that time and desire to practice is going to be lacking, or it is that you’re rather looking for some therapy about “player’s block”…well, we wouldn’t be so happy together … 😉

For all others, please call or email for more details!
